Both sides of the bridge crossing the a1 have barriers that stop wide and or long bikes, trikes, from using this cycle route.

Reported via mobile in the Pavement/footpath issue (NH) category by Duncan Pringle at 14:01, Sat 22 April 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4473645.

These barriers need to be removed, to allow people to travel safely with their children in bike trailers or in cargo bikes. With these barriers in place it is simply not possible. I imagine mobility scooters will have the same issue.

Updates

  • Thank you for your email 22 April 2023 about barriers on both sides of the bridge crossing the A1. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused and appreciate the time you have taken to contact us about the issue

We believe the barriers were installed by Newcastle City Council. They may have been installed to either discourage motor scooters and bikes from being ridden over the structure, or to encourage cyclists to dismount in order to cross the bridge and/or to reduce the risk of conflict between faster moving cyclists with slower moving pedestrians.

We have contacted the Council so they are aware of the issue you have raised.

Thank you again for contacting us. If there is anything we can help you with, please email or telephone our Contact Centre. They’re available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email info@nationalhighways.co.uk Alternatively, please visit the National Highways website at nationalhighways.co.uk.
