Metal speed limit signs for no apparent reason

Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 05:49, Thu 20 April 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4464155.

There are 50 MPH signs in both directions of the M3 just before junction 3 (If going S/B). These have been there for about 2 weeks with no roadworks and I can't see a reason for them. Its an accident waiting to happen as when you approach the signs all traffic put there brakes on as its not expected as its a smart motorway.

Have these signs been left there by mistake? Maybe roadworks were taken away and they didn't take the signs away. As this stretch of the M3 is a smart motorway its strange why the reduced speed limit is shoiwn on the digital screens as they normally would be.

Updates

  • I think the work men just didn't collect them. There's no reason for them

  • Thank you for your report concerning 50mph M3 speed limit. The temporary current speed limit of 50mph on the M3 has been in place whilst we undertake overnight technology works in the area. To ensure the safety of road users, we kept the signage and speed in place 24/7 to provide consistency to the flow of traffic whilst these works have been undertaken. We acknowledge that we should have put some signage up to advise of what works were taking place and for this we apologise. I’m pleased to advise that the works are now complete, and the 50mph speed limit signs have been removed.
