Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4464072.

Dear highway team,I was driving along m62 eastbound around 23:00 hrs ,there are some roadworks going on at slip road to junction 26 but access to roadworks has not been closed properly making driving assuming exit to M606 is still open then making them rejoining the carriageway when found the exit closed ,it’s not been well signed for closure either on approach to closures also there is no redx or information on smart motorway display signs alarming them for road closure.can you please ensure the highways are safe for motorists and the highway workers and not confusing. Regards

  • Thank you for your report around the quality of information on the M62 eastbound exit roadworks. We apologise for any confusion or frustration caused.

There was a build up of traffic on the approach to the closure, resulting in vehicles moving very slowly. The closure taper was installed correctly to Chapter 8 specification, however when cars are moving at a crawl the spacing between the cones seems wide enough for a vehicle to pass – this isn’t a mistake in the traffic management, as under normal circumstances the vehicles would be approaching at normal motorway speeds so the gap would appear very small.

In this instance it appears some vehicles have decided to squeeze through the closure taper, and multiple other vehicles have followed. This resulted in many vehicles incorrectly accessing the closure. Fortunately, the motorists were escorted out of the closure prior to reaching the works area.

Upon reviewing this situation our traffic management contractor have ensured additional measures are in place to prevent this from happening again, including additional warning signs and information boards, CCTV units, an additional barrier system, an Intellicone alarm system and vehicles blocking the road.

    Kind regards National Highways
