A1 North & Southbound between Stevenage & Hatfield

Reported via desktop in the Pothole (NH) category anonymously at 17:42, Mon 17 April 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4452397.

I was pleased to see several reports already of these potholes but needs action urgently now. There is high risk of damage to vehicles & definitely motorcyclists. The roads in certain parts have large deep holes on the edge of lane 1, in between lanes 1 & 2 with the road breaking up more & more by the day. I'm a motorcyclist and have had a few near misses a couple of these when overtaking & moving back into lane 1 and getting the wheels stuck in a long rut which runs parallel with the road and its only a matter of time that someone will get caught out & go down & then run over. Hitting these the larger holes dotted around at 70 mph & less is dangerous & can't been seen at night. This has to be inspected - You can't miss them. This has been bad for quite sometime now.

  • Thank you for informing our Customer Contact Centre about the potholes on the A1 (M) at Welwyn. I appreciate you taking the time to report this. I’ve passed your observations to our maintenance team who are endeavouring to find a permanent solution for the pothole issues in this area.

Potholes can be hazardous and we have processes in place to ensure they are made safe quickly. We carry out frequent safety patrols to monitor the condition of the road. Any potholes or defects we find are recorded. Repairs are then prioritised based on the severity of the defect. Kind regards National Highways
