Litter

Reported via desktop in the Litter (NH) category by Rae Voller at 09:41, Thu 13 April 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4433220.

There is a build up of litter between Junction 1 -4 of the M53. Residents have contacted me as a local green campaigner as they are concerned it is not being managed and gives a poor impression of our area as people travel toward New Brighton as tourists. Please can you advise how often the area is reviewed and maintained? Thank you.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report concerning litter on the M53 between junctions 1 and 4. We follow Defra legislative requirements under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (EPA). This imposes a duty on us to keep public highways within our network clear of litter and refuse. Defra’s Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse 2006 provides a practical guide to meeting the duties under the EPA.

We currently undertake an annual litter pick as part of our cyclic maintenance process. In addition, weekly inspections of the network identify litter build ups at levels C & D in Defra’s code of practice. We welcome reports from customers helping us to identify litter build ups.

We’ll inspect the issue within 10 working days and raise a job for removing the litter if required.

If you would like a more detailed response on this matter, please contact our 24hr Customer Contact Centre • Email – info@nationalhighways.co.uk • Tel: 0300 123 5000

    Kind regards
