Single lane for services and Bristol-bound A369 exit causes dangerous queuing and driving
Reported via mobile in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 15:06, Tue 11 April 2023

There has been a problem with this section of the interchange since the works were completed last year. The road markings show only one (the leftmost) lane for services or Bristol-bound A369 traffic. At busy times this causes tailbacks in this lane, which obstructs traffic coming from Bristol West wanting to get onto the northbound M5. It also potentially blocks southbound M5 traffic coming from Portishead. In addition to needless congestion (there are 2 empty lanes), this leads to some drivers performing dangerous manoeuvres, such as cutting in from the middle lane to access the Bristol-bound A369. The simple solution is to replicate the layout when travelling in the opposite direction, from Bristol West (or travelling south on the M5) towards Portishead, that is to say allow both left and middle lanes to exit onto the A369, then have the two lanes merge into one after the exit (but before the Portbury junction).

Thank you for contacting National Highways concerning junction 19 of the M5.
We've carried out numerous checks and believe the layout of the roundabout is optimum for the most efficient traffic flow. However, we believe that the signal timings are out of adjustment and we plan to rectify shortly.
