M27 Speed Camera Flashing
Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 11:45, Thu 6 April 2023
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4405673.
Eastbound between junctions 5 and 7, 05/04/2023 at approximately 17:00 - gantry with HADECS 3 camera showing 60 limit. Myself and all others around me slowed to approximately 58mph well before the camera, however I got flashed as did those behind me. There are multiple reports on this website of this happening with those affected receiving notices of intended prosecution, and I have personally seen the cameras on this stretch of road flash multiple times for drivers clearly travelling under the posted speed limit. This is absolutely ridiculous and has clearly been happening for quite some time. It causes an enormous amount of undue stress and is a real distraction for drivers with cameras going off randomly, capturing cars who are not committing offences . I drive this stretch of road twice every day and I am thoroughly observant of every variable speed limit - there is absolutely no chance that I or those around me were speeding. If I receive a notice of intended prosecution it will be appealed and a formal complaint made. I would also appreciate an investigation into the operation of the cameras on this stretch of motorway - it is completely unacceptable.
Updates
-
Thank you for your report concerning speed cameras on the M27.
We can advise that these speed cameras are all working as expected, and we're not aware of any faults in the system on this stretch of road. The cameras do operate across all lanes, and so we realise there may be some confusion with regards to which vehicle caused the flash, however please be assured that these cameras do take footage of the road which is then reviewed by the Police as necessary, so no vehicles found not to be violating speed limit restrictions or red X restrictions will not be prosecuted.
We have carried out studies on the new cameras' flash function and have found no evidence that the new models cause unsafe distractions to drivers.
