Smart motorway signs

Reported via mobile in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 22:02, Tue 4 April 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4399469.

The overhead smart signs today contradicted the metal signage creating confusion. Clearly the hard shoulder is being used during the works as the inside lane but every overhead gantry had an X displayed above the hard shoulder whilst a 50mph limit displayed above the inaccessible fast lane. This created unnecessary congestion and confusion with drivers not wanting to pass under a X pulling into the old inside lane thereby only leaving 2 lanes for use, despite the old hard shoulder solid white line having being tarred over to blank it out. Also sometimes the overhead limits display different to the fixed signs. All very confusing and actually borderline dangerous given the number of lane cameras used there and the constantly changing instructions issued to drivers who don't want to be picked up by a camera accidentally doing something wrong. I saw numerous unnecessary late lane changes to avoid this so all in all very poor, please sort this out immediately

  • Still a problem. It is dangerous for overhead signage to display lane closures over the left running lane during the works and to display a different speed limit than the 50mph during road works
