Large deer on central reservation. Beheaded.

Reported via desktop in the Dead animals (NH) category anonymously at 22:44, Wed 29 March 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4374844.

Near the rest area, and on the central reservation. A large deer was struck and killed. The following day, someone has crossed the East bound carriage way to saw the head off of the dear and leave the body. The bloody decapitated body is facing oncoming traffic, causing distress to my children.

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways regarding the dead deer in the central reservation of the A120.

We appreciate how distressing it can be for our customers to see animal remains. When in a live carriageway, they are removed as soon as possible by the police or ourselves as they constitute a danger through being an obstruction.

Remains in the central reservation require a road closure, either through planned maintenance or via a rolling road block, to ensure the safety of our workers. Either method results in disruption for our customers and requires availability of the correct resources.

However, following your report, I have contacted our maintenance team asking them to remove these remains as soon as possible.

Thank you again for contacting us. If you need more information about this, please feel free to contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 500 or by email at

    Kind regards

    National Highways
