No protection between cycle / pedestrian and dual carriageway - very dangerous

Reported via desktop in the Pavement/footpath/cycleway/bridleway issue (NH) category anonymously at 11:37, Sat 18 March 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4327952.

Cycle / pedestrian path along north side of A27, predominantly but not limited to approx. 1 mile between turn off south for The Grain Store Lewes and turn off north for Ashcombe farm. There is no separation between the path and the highway, not even a grass verge. When there is two-way cycle traffic on the path, this makes it very difficult to pass without the danger of the wind buffeting from passing traffic of speeding motor vehicles on the highway causing one to fall into the other cyclist or into the highway, which can obviously cause a serious accident or even be fatal. The danger is severely increased at night and / or in wet conditions, when headlights can be literally blinding, especially modern bright white LED lights which dazzle and can easily cause flash blindness (temporary loss of vision). Almost the entire pathway has a significant proportion of the total width obscured by encroaching grass, thus narrowing the available surface for cycle / pedestrian traffic and increasing the stated issue. Even where there are intermittent bollards along the route, this does not prevent the potential danger, whereas a continuous barrier would be much more effective. This would also prevent cars from getting too close to the kerb and reduce the wind buffeting. The problem has been present since the pathway was constructed, but is becoming more serious with the increase in cycle traffic in particular as more people cycle to and from work. Removal of the encroaching grass would only partially alleviate the problem - a barrier is required. The resurfaced pathway from Falmer to Woodingdean has made a huge difference to the journey between Brighton and Lewes, although some kind of warning at the path crossing B2123 / Drove Road, e.g. coloured road surface and warning signs of a cycle / pedestrian crossing, would help to show motor traffic along the highway of the crossing route (see separate report).
