Roadworks traffic light almost unseeable

Reported via mobile in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 16:13, Wed 15 March 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4317304.

I was driving East along the A47 last night. On the single carriageway stretch near Honingham there are roadworks, closing one lane. I believe it is hedge cutting going on. I reached this point at about 22:10.

There was a traffic light placed directly in front of a van facing me with full lights on, another van behind, a floodlight and yellow flashing lights. The whole effect was of an oncoming light show. On a damp evening, the glare on the road from all of these made it almost impossible to see. It was so dazzling I only just realised one of the lights was a steady red. I slammed on my brakes and reversed until I found the red "Stop here" sign.

The car in front of me went straight through the red light and had to pull into a side road to avoid the oncoming traffic.

Can you please impress upon your contractors that they must ensure road signs and signals are clear to see? This is a very dangerous situation that has been caused by careless positioning of traffic lights and too much light in the wrong place around it.

I really hope it will not cause an accident.

  • Thank you for your report concerning the traffic lights at Hornignham and the A47.

I understand these were temporary roadworks but I've asked our inspector to ensure that in the future any works correspond to current standards.

    Kind regards
