Litter

Reported via desktop in the Litter (NH) category anonymously at 12:41, Wed 15 March 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4316191.

Drove from Leeds to Folkestone and back on 3.3.23 and 12.3.23. The litter on the A1 was appalling, particularly in South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Who is responsible for emptying the bins in lay-bys and for clearing the litter at the side of the road.

Updates

  • The A1 is the responsibility of the Local Authority for which it runs through, in so much that Doncaster and Rotherham are responsible for the A1 in South Yorkshire, and the laybys and litter bins within them.
The A1(M) is National Highways' responsibility and we undertake regular cyclic maintenance for litter, grass cutting and general sweeping and clearance both to the nearside and offside edges and verges.
The A1(M) in South Yorkshire currently has works being undertaken to clear litter from the nearside verges, slip roads and roundabouts (roundabouts that are NH responsibility and not Local Authority).
These works will be repeated again from June/July and at a frequency of up to three times per year depending on location or highlighted as a litter hotspot.

Where we can, we will inform Local Authorities that we have received a customer complaint of litter and ask that they undertake checks and assess for clearance, however, this tends to be location specific and can often prove difficult with Local Authorities.

    Kind regards
