  • I’ve passed this to our inspector who will visit the location within the next 7 days to assess what action is required. If we believe the issue is causing a risk to public safety, we’ll ensure it’s made safe within 24 hours of our inspection. This won’t be a permanent repair but will be a reactive temporary measure to ensure the risk to road users is minimised whilst a more permanent solution is developed.

More permanent solutions, and addressing issues that aren’t a safety concern, take us longer to deliver for a number of reasons:

The work needs to be developed, with careful consideration of how it may affect the operation of the network and impact all of our customers including drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, equestrians, neighbours and stakeholders. The work then needs to be programmed. We take great care to ensure we don’t have roadworks close together in order to minimise the impact on our customers. This may mean we’re unable to attend to the issue as quickly as we’d like, especially if we have a major scheme nearby. Unless a safety issue, we also avoid working on a route being used as part of a diversion for another set of work. Lots of our work is dependent on issues outside of our control: Weather. For example and we can’t re-paint white lines if it’s raining because it’s washed away before it binds to the surface Incidents and emergency work. We made need to re-deploy our resources at short notice to help manage incidents on the network, or to complete higher priority work such as safety barrier repairs following a collision. Winter service. Our workforce may be needed for higher priority operational issues, such as driving gritters to ensure our roads remain open during severe weather.

For any of these reasons, we’d have to cancel and re-programme the work.

With this in mind, it’s very difficult to give an accurate indication of timescales however, we do aim to complete any work required within 3 months of our initial inspection.
