M58 and M60

Reported via mobile in the Litter (NH) category anonymously at 18:11, Thu 16 February 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4239122.

All along motorway verges from M58-M60 and M62 a disgusting amount of debris, litter, cardboard, plastic wrapping, road signs and traffic cones. Absolutely no excuses-there is barely any greenery left because of the huge amount of rubbish. Not only is this an environment hazard but will effect road user safety if blown onto carriage way. Why can’t you just do your job and maintain our motorways and clean up this mess? You have turned this country into a mess through your lack of management and maintenance. Clearly you have no pride or care about your responsibility to maintain these routes and ensure cleanliness, safety or care for wildlife. My journey from Manchester Airport to Rochdale was like travelling through a landfill site. Deal with it!!! Try a common sense approach and clean up this rubbish whilst you do maintenance work.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways regarding litter on the M58, M60 and M62. Litter picking on these routes is the responsibility of National Highways. Over recent weeks we’ve conducted a network wide inspection to identify locations of litter build ups. Millions of customers travel on our network daily and despite our best efforts to clear it, our network quickly becomes littered with rubbish from vehicles and unsecured loads. We follow Defra legislative requirements under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (EPA). This imposes a duty on us to keep public highways within our network clear of litter and refuse. Defra’s Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse 2006 provides a practical guide to meeting the duties under the EPA. We expect locations identified as being below the standards required in the Code of Practice will be cleared by the end of March 2023. If you would like a more detailed response on this matter, please contact our 24hr Customer Contact Centre • Email – info@nationalhighways.co.uk • Tel: 0300 123 5000 Kind regards National Highways
