Needs a regular maintenance programme

Reported via mobile in the Flytipping (NH) category anonymously at 16:48, Thu 9 February 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4218599.

The A2 needs a regular maintenance programme, clearly one isn’t in place already as it should never be allowed to get into the state it is in now. This road is very badly flytipped with lots of rubbish everywhere along it. There is graffiti in numerous locations. It has broken road signs, it has road signs which can’t be seen at night as the lights that are meant to illuminate them don’t work and the verges are overgrown and need cutting back - as does the overgrown central reservation. Is it anyone job to manage the maintenance of this road? Because it’s hard to believe it has someone doing this correctly currently.

Updates

  • I’m sorry to hear about littering along the A2. Please be assured that litter is a serious issue, and we share your concern about the amount of rubbish that is discarded on our roads.

We carry out regular litter inspections along the A2 west from Dartford to the M2, with our most recent inspection on 26 January. Following our inspector’s recommendations, we’ve instructed our maintenance partners to arrange litter picks. In addition to litter picking, they will undertake grass cutting and gully clearance.

We’ve instructed the works to be carried out within 28 days, subject to suitable traffic management approval, to provide a safe working environment for the crews. Once the eastbound verges and slips have been picked, we will turn our attention westbound. Regarding the damaged signage on the A2. We are aware of this matter and we’re currently going through a design and safety process to update these. Therefore, this will also require new foundations and new signs. Although we do understand that the signs look unsightly, please be assured that there are no safety concerns. At present, we’re not able to provide you with the dates for the works. Our inspectors will continue to monitor this regularly.
