Traffic lights on roundabout out of sync

Reported via desktop in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 18:21, Sun 5 February 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4205947.

When it takes over 10 minutes to get off at junction 7, due the lights only allowing 3 cars over the lights at anyone time. The traffic backs up on to the motorway, could a traffic engineer check the sequence of the lights. I know use junction 8 to get off of the motorway. Since the installation of a smart motor way we have lost the dedicated lane from junction 7 to junction 8. Why was that dedicated lane removed for?

Updates

  • Thank you for your report concerning traffic light phasing issues at Junction 7 of the M27.

We're closely monitoring the traffic signals in this area, and our system reports faults with the signalling for repair where necessary. Currently we're not aware of any technological faults with the area, although we are aware of an issue with driver behaviour including exit blocking being commonplace, which may be the cause of the high levels of traffic in the area. Unfortunately, as we're not an enforcement agency we're not able to take action against this behaviour.

Regarding the Junction 8 lane removal, this occurred following Smart Motorway works and was carried out due to scheme restraints. We have plans to carry out an improvement scheme in this area to improve safety and congestion issues, details of which you can find at the following link: https://nationalhighways.co.uk/ our-roads/ south-east/ m27-southampton-junction-8/
