New traffic lights at services roundabout M18/M180
Reported via mobile in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 08:11, Mon 30 January 2023
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4183685.
The new traffic lights that have been installed next to the services exit are now making the traffic even more dangerous than it has been previously. The roundabout was so busy this morning that everyone coming off the M18 & M180 is having to queue for a long time to even reach the roundabout. This means people are now going through the traffic lights on red due to lack of patience & people can no longer see which lane they need to be in when approaching the services side, therefore others are not moving into their correct lanes. The timing of the new lights does not appear to be sufficient for the amount of traffic needing to use the roundabout. I used to think the risk of lorries pulling out of the services was bad but now it’s just seems even more dangerous.

Can I please support the previous comment about the new lights on the jct 5 roundabout, I queued for 20 minutes to get onto the roundabout from the M180 and was unable to move safely into the correct lane as there was so much congestion.

I also need to complain about the new lights - the timings are so out. There is more time given to vehicles coming out of the Services, than to the main traffic. I myself queued for over half an hour this morning just to get through lights. Also signage needs to be made clearer as to which lanes go where, as previously stated in the above commment, you cannot move safely into the lane you need

Poor synchronization of new traffic lights causing heavy congestion.

Situation is getting worse, 50 minutes worth of delays from M180 to j5 of the m18. New set of traffic lights have been put in place which is causing tail backs and personally would say its currently a accident waiting to happen, instead of installing new lights only 300 yards away from the other lights of m18/m180 they should of just delayed the lights a couple more seconds so the service lane could get of safely.

I was stuck in the standstill traffic this morning, poor idea requires a rethink, maybe delay the lights on the roundabout and slip road to let service traffic onto roundabout

50 minute delay this morning and huge queues on M180 due to the new traffic lights being brought into operation. I suggest the best option is to cover them up again.

Travelling this road for 4 years Monday to Friday and this morning was an absolute shambles. Talk about increasing traffic jams and causing more emissions from stationary vehicles. This additional set of lights is completely unnecessary. If these are the same tomorrow, I’ll be travelling through to Thorne and doubling back to use the feeder lane to the m180. Who’s idea this was to install these lights here should have a long hard think about this poor decision. Totally and utter unnecessary.

National Highways, working with a developer, have been upgrading M18 Junction 5 and in particular the exit from the Motorway Service Area. This is to accommodate major future development and manage potential growth in traffic and manage traffic.
Over the weekend a programme was implemented to manage the introduction of the new signals, however unfortunately the design specification was incorrect resulting in queuing and delay.
As soon as the congestion became apparent engineers deleted the programme and switched to vehicle activation control, which detects queue lengths from ground loops or detectors in the road surfacing.
An engineer will be on site this week to ensure no queue build up occurs until a permanent solution is implemented.
The proposal is to implement MOVA (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation) and that is programmed to be installed next week or sooner if possible. This will link with other traffic controlled junctions on the approaches and improve the flows.
Until then we will monitor and adjust as necessary. Thank you for your patience whilst we work to resolve this issue.
Kind regards
National Highways
