Deteriorating road surface

Reported via desktop in the Road surface (NH) category anonymously at 18:17, Thu 26 January 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4174445.

Throughout the current road works between coal house roundabout and Washington A1231 turn off the road surface has large potholes, with large sections of tarmac missing, where the original white lines have been burnt away more pot holes are forming in lines which once a car gets caught in the line it’s difficult to get out. Can you look at repairing the defects before a car gets damaged or there is an accident

Updates

  • Thank you for your report concerning the carriageway condition on the A1 Birtley to Coalhouse scheme. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the carriageway condition.

We are temporarily filling in these potholes when they get reported to us and we are in contact with an external company awaiting availability to organise a closure to fill these in with a permanent repair as soon as possible. Our Traffic Safety Control Officers (TSCO’s) patrol the scheme regularly and report any carriageway defects to the traffic management team. The team have a plan in place to repair potholes as they are identified and continue to fill them in as soon as possible. When the widening of the A1 is complete and we have the extra lane either side of the carriageway, we will be resurfacing all lanes as part of the A1 Birtley to Coal House scheme.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
