Prevent Queuing traffic with privacy barrier

Reported via mobile in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category anonymously at 12:01, Mon 23 January 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4161488.

Every morning, traffic queues, slowly moving along this stretch. Cars come to a standstill briefly which causes long queues. If you observe as a driver from the opposite direction, you see that EVERY driver slows down to look over the bridge down onto the land below where travellers dwell. It causes such a build up which also affects traffic joining the roundabout from Hartpury direction. If some barriers were secured to the bridge to block the view to drivers, I believe traffic would be considerably more free flowing and also safer as drivers are not distracted whilst ‘rubbernecking’. It is particularly bad when local flooding is happening as people are curious if the homes are flooded. As soon as cars are past this point the traffic goes back to normal speed. Human behaviour is fascinating but surely this could be easily rectified?

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways concerning traffic queues on the A40.

We're aware of the issue, however the queueing is a result of congestion at the roundabout during peak hours.

We've checked our collision records and found that there've not been any recorded injury collisions on this section of the A40 east of Over Roundabout in the last 5 years, so at the moment the queuing doesn't result in a safety concern.

If you require any further information please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or info@nationalhighways.co.uk.

    Kind regards
