Faulty speed camera on A1 southband between B1043 and A141

Reported via mobile in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 01:33, Tue 17 January 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4138639.

I have been flashed yesterday around 22.00 on first camera of variable speed system without any speed limit showed there. I was going 55mph on the dual carriageway with hgv, so national speed limit is 60mph. LED signs over the carriageway were switched off, black. It happened same thing tonight around 22.00. Is this camera faulty? What is wrong with it?

Updates

  • Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I’ve searched our signage systems and confirm that no speed signage was displayed at the above time and date. I’m sorry you and other drivers were caused to brake on seeing the flash. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, I will ensure this is reported to our technology team for further investigation.

There are built-in safeguards which prevent the cameras from activating if there is a critical fault. The system is designed to ensure that it will only capture an offence when the equipment is working correctly or signage is displayed.

Thank you again for contacting us. If you need more information about this, please feel free to contact me. For anything else, please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 500 or by email at info@nationalhighways.co.uk

    Kind regards

  • This same camera has falsely recorded me at 80MPH when I was using cruise control at 78. So I think the calibration must have been out or again it is falsely triggering. Have other drivers had similar problems?

  • I’ve been flashed two nights running at this location. I was doing 50mph on cruise control, the last speed sign I passed read 50. The subsequent sign further down the carriageway was 40 but I hadn’t passed that section yet! Incredibly distracting. I’ve now had to drive back and record the stretch on my dash cam for evidence for fear of being ticketed.

  • I was also flashed around 18:30 on 25/1/24 when doing 50 via cruise control. As you stated the variable speed limit signs gradually dropped from national speed limit before the signs to 60mph, 50mph (where the camera is) and 40mph after the camera.

  • Hi, I was flashed today 31/01/24. I was heading north today coming back from Luton in a car. No variable speed limit shown so 70mph national speed limit, camera flashed me while under 70mph.

  • I just passed the same camera tonight at 21:25 on 11/6/24. speed limit was dropped to 40mph due to road works camera was flashing every few seconds how is it possible that drivers saw the camera flashing and did not slowdown. I think something is wrong with the camera. could you please give us an update on that. many thanks.
