Flooding in pedestrian underpass
Reported via desktop in the Flooding/drainage (NH) category anonymously at 14:50, Tue 10 January 2023

The pedestrian underpass below the A31 from Gravel Lane, Ringwood, into town is frequently flooded during periods of heavy rain, and often remains so for days on end. It has happened numerous times over several years. This year I have been aware of pedestrians detouring by walking along the slip road (which is signed as a ‘Clearway’) and crossing into town at the main A31/A338 foundabout. This is apotential source of a serious road traffic accident.

Thank you for your report concerning flooding at Gravel Lane underpass.
We’re aware of the flooding issue in this area, and we appreciate that a rapid solution would be the most desirable outcome. We are arranging improvements to the drainage systems in the area which will be implemented later this year, and we hope this will alleviate the flooding in this underpass on a permanent basis than clearance works can provide. We apologise that we’re not able to provide an immediate fix, and thank you for your patience whilst we make sure that these plans are conducted thoroughly and safely.

(John Haywood, Town Councillor for Ringwood North)
A number of residents have contacted me regarding flooding in the underpass. This is major cycling and walking route between the two halves of Ringwood, which is effectively unpassable to pedestrians when flooded.
I welcome the fact that National Highways is proposing to resolve this problem and urge that it is commenced as soon as is practical.
Ringwood has suffered from quite a large amount of disruption recently owing to the A31 roadworks, now thankfully complete. It would be good to have this particular issue fixed promptly.

This problem has been an issue for at least five years. Today (20-01-2023) it was muddy and icy due to the underpass not being cleaned after the flood water has receeded
Since the A31 Ringwood bridge replacement and road widening scheme the alternative footpath to Ringwood town centre via the roundabout has been decommissioned.
Can explain why this alternative footpath to the Ringwood town centre has been removed?
