The lit up billboards are dazzling and blinded me when driving past them to approach Cannot Circus.

Reported via mobile in the Street lighting (NH) category anonymously at 20:25, Sun 8 January 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4102440.

The light up advertising billboards are dazzling on the M32 flyover as you approach Cabot circus. It really dazzled me and I couldn't see the road for a couple of moments. They need to be turned down or off. They're a real distraction on a very busy road and will cause accidents if they haven't already.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways concerning the advertising billboard on the M32.

These electronic billboards went through the planning process some years ago.

When assessing a planning application, any recommendation for refusal has to be justified. Accepting that adverts, by their very nature are distracting, there's no evidence of accidents elsewhere associated with electronic signs.

We did recommend conditions, including the need to review accident statistics after three years. Over this period the accident profile in this area has actually improved. However, any enforcement of conditions is the responsibility of Bristol City Council as the local planning authority and they can be contacted by 0117 922 2000 or https://www.bristol.gov.uk/ contact.

If you require any further information please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or info@nationalhighways.co.uk.

    Kind regards

    National Highways.
