No road markings

Reported via desktop in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 17:43, Fri 6 January 2023

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4096139.

It's seems popular to use the outside exit lane to turn left to Clevedon. As there are no road markings there is nothing to stop drivers on the inside lane going straight on. I have witnessed several close accidents. In my opinion the inside lane should be marked 'LEFT' and the outside lane should be marked 'STRAIGHT ON'

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways concerning road markings.

At the moment making a straight ahead movement from lane 1 is not a disallowed movement at this location. A left turn into Clevedon can be made using both lane 1 and lane 2 because this junction is effectively a 3-arm roundabout. The only other movements than the left turn to Clevedon are going straight back on to the M5 northbound or making a U-turn to back onto the M5 southbound.

We've checked our collision data (reported injury collisions only) and found that there have not been any injury collisions at this location involving conflicts caused by lane changes.

We agree that arrows in the approach lanes could eliminate the current ambiguity, but without a recorded injury problem, we'd not be able to justify these works as a safety improvement. We will however keep your suggestion in mind and suggest to include this when the next resurfacing is undertaken.

If you require any further information please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or info@nationalhighways.co.uk.

    Kind regards
