Ouse Bridge speed restrictions
Reported via desktop in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 10:21, Thu 5 January 2023
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4089445.
Living in Manchester, but travelling over to Beverley quite regularly, I cannot remember when the Ouse Bridge was free of speed restrictions, either for the railings to be replaced, or now some sort of structural repairs. However the current 30mph limit stretching for nearly 3 miles seems like severe overkill to me. Personally I have never seen such a low limit on any motorway in England before, not even the smart motorway work around the M60 around Manchester, which entailed narrow lanes (an excuse I see you have mentioned to a previous complaint). This stretch of the M62 is probably the quietest one in terms of traffic flow in the whole country, so I can see no sensible reason for it except for your organisation to enforce it 'because you can'. There are now average speed cameras, which seem to have stopped any drivers who, as mentioned on other complaints, were completely ignoring the 30mph limit, so that issue has been eliminated - I saw no-one at all going over 30 this weekend. Furthermore, as also mentioned by other drivers on here, There is NEVER any evidence of work being carried out on the bridge, no vehicles, workers, or progress. So what is the work being done, and how much longer will it take ? Finally, please explain the reasoning behind your decision to apply this limit.

Good morning, I was sure I had sent that report when I first raised it, but have heard nothing since. Anyway I used the same route last week, same speed restriction, and as usual hardly any evidence of progress after 6 months. I find this absolutely unacceptable. regards Nick Bunting

I'm not in Yorkshire at the moment, but my brother said he got stuck in traffic there last week due to an over turned caravan on the bridge I think he said. Not saying much for the 30mph speed limit... Though I don't know the circumstances of the accident of course, so I cant really comment. But at 30mph over a motorway bridge, I guess I could easily imagine concentration to be an issue at times... Any further signs of this being finished soon then do we know?

Thank you for contacting us via FixMyStreet about the speed restrictions for our ongoing Ouse Bridge scheme. We’re sorry that you’ve not received a response to your query.
We're sorry for any inconvenience caused as a result of our scheme. The 30mph restriction has been enforced to maintain the safety of the public and operatives.
We've bridging plates installed on the eastbound carriageway which have a recommended 30mph limit to ensure their effective use and reduce the risks of damage and potentially disruptive future maintenance requirements.
The contraflow is maintained at 30mph to promote a safe speed for traffic, in particular through the crossover sections, but also to avoid confusion with a different speed limit being imposed dependent on which section of the traffic management you are travelling. We feel increasing the speed limit could possibly promote an increased likelihood of stop-start traffic and ultimately congestion. We’re on track to be complete by Spring 2024.
Kind Regards National Highways
