Bridge works needing lights and 1 lane of teaffic
Reported via mobile in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 20:08, Mon 19 December 2022
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4045193.
Signalling sequencing needs attention. 3 times in the last week I have travelled from Glossop to Sheffield and each time it’s taking 40-45 mins to travel eastbound through the lights but no queue at all westbound. Different times and days. Please look into this as it’s an unnecessary delay travelling eastbound. Thanks.

Thank you for contacting us about the ongoing issue at Woodhead Pass on the A628. The situation is that one of the bridge parapets has been damaged by an errant vehicle following a collision, meaning that it no longer provides adequate protection to vehicles travelling over the bridge at national speed limit. That’s why we’ve had to deploy the 24/7 signal control and single lane running over the bridge.
We’ve looked into options for reopening both lanes of the A628, but the road alignment here is such that there’s no room to fit a standard layout of temporary protective barrier for the damaged section of the bridge along with 2 traffic lanes of adequate width. We are considering other options but there isn’t one which passes the risk assessment without a reduced speed limit enforced by temporary safety cameras. Unfortunately, we have been unable to source this equipment.
Going forward we will carry out the permanent repairs to the parapet that would enable us to reopen the bridge as soon as we are able. We have a gathered a project team together and are working hard to design the repairs and the temporary scaffold arrangement required for the work to be done. The issue is that our work must comply with safety requirements, in this case the Construction Design Management regulations, (enforced by the Health & Safety Executive), and as such both the temporary access facilities and permanent repair work has to be designed and checked.
We appreciate this is a far from an ideal situation as it does look very much like we’ve restricted a road and are now doing nothing. This is exacerbated by the fact that there is little damage to the parapet visible to customers when driving past the affected section. However, these rules are in place for good reason, not least compliance with the law and protecting the public purse. We can only apologise for the current situation and assure you that we are investigating every avenue to resolve the situation as soon as possible. We very much appreciate your patience during this time. Thank you again for contacting us. If there is anything else we can help you with, please email or telephone our Contact Centre.
