Unclear road borders and unlit street

Reported via desktop in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 10:04, Sun 6 November 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3941931.

The road that turns into the new Shell station does not have solid borders, and the road is poorly lit, making it difficult to see the sharp bend and curb at night. I crashed into the curb and punctured my tyres thinking it would continue straight to the junction to Langham. The Shell station attendant said this is a regular occurence here. I can see on Google Maps itself that there are just broken lines towards the Shell station, but no solid lines to mark the edge of the highway until the curb starts. Please draw clearer lines or light up the entrance of the petrol station better.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about the unclear road borders on the A12.

The broken white lines signify the slip road into the Shell garage and also the access to properties. A solid white line here wouldn't be appropriate as the broken lines act as a 'Give-way'. The solid white line is reinstated between the garage entrance and exit.

If you find yourself in the dedicated lane too soon, you should pull into the services and back out again to continue to the exit slip road.

An inspector will look at this when they're out on their next inspection, but this is not a collision site we are aware of. We will look at any improvements we can make, but as the dedicated lane is privately owned, we may not be able to make changes to the markings.

It would be the garage's responsibility to improve the lighting at their entrance.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
