Faulty Speed Camera M4-2493B - Jcn 10-8/9 Eastbound
Reported via mobile in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 15:45, Fri 28 October 2022
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3921604.
I traveled through the variable speed camera at 09:30 on 23/10/2022 and when I passed under the overhead sign it definitely read 60mph, as myself and my passenger had been very carefully monitoring the signs, using speed limiter and were particularly cautious due to the very poor driving conditions. As we came out the other side of the gantry we were both surprised to notice a double flash from a camera as we knew we had not been travelling above the speed shown. The following sign we came to did go down to 50mph and I again adhered to the limit. On my return from London on the afternoon of 25/10/2022 I noticed that virtually every vehicle on the Eastbound carriageway was getting flashed by the same camera as we had been through on 23/10/2022, it is hard to imagine so many people were ignoring the speed sign and can only conclude there must be a some technical problem and a review of variance in numbers flashed compared to normal might highlight the situation? I have today received a fixed notice, which will be impossible to contend without going to court, which I will not be doing. From what I saw there must be an enormous number of other drivers who have also been caught out by what I have to suggest is a fault and I would request this matter is investigated urgently.

Thank you for your report concerning a possible faulty camera on the M4.
There is a slight discrepancy over the location of the camera described in the log. Using the coordinates and the point indicated on the map, there is no camera at this location. If more detailed information is provided for the location of the camera this would help an investigation.

I've got a notice for M4-2493B as well on 7th of November saying that I've exceeded a variable of 40 MPH speed limit in an area where the speed limit is 60 MPH.

Think I got caught on this speed camera coming back from Bracknell last night. Was not doing over 70 mph I did notice the double flashing. Braked and looked at the speed odometer it was under 70 MPH it was 70 on my sat nav system.

I've just received a notice, dated 03/08/2024 however, was using a speed limiter at the time.
Can you please verify the information as otherwise it is difficult to know whether people have truly been speeding in the alleged area or, have had their speed taken at a different location, where the speed limit was not as suggested.

Hi I was served with a notice for the camera and I dont recall overspeeding because I was mindful of the limit and cameras. I saw other cars being flashed too! Anyway, with no photographic evidence provided by the police even in the digital age, how can you contest the speed notice!

I received a notice today that I was caught speeding @ 82mph when I was in a convoy of cars with a speed limiter and cruise control on, I am the only one to receive a notice, all other drivers have received nothing, we were all traveling similar speeds

I received a notice for speeding at this location @87mph and I can't remember going that fast.. It was for 11th Oct 2024. Any chance that this camera is faulty as I see two other users receiving tickets for 6th and 9th Oct

I received a PCN on 10th November 2024 on the same location M4 JCT 10-8/9 Northbound I the car was on speed limiter . No way I was going fast. I think the people in charge of these camera needs to assures members of public that the speed camera in question is calibrated and it is accurate 100% otherwise people will start loosing faith to any PCN coming from that camera. I see many people complaining about it and no reply from authority !! Can someone give us answers please

M4-2493A- Jct 8/9-10 Westbound was doing 60mph and the speed limit was 60mph got flashed the next gantry the speed limit changed to 50mph and the one after that was 40mph
I'm thinking as I was about to go under the speed limit changed to 50mph
Got the notice today saying I was doing 60mph in a 50mph zone

I recieved an alledged speeding offence noticed for the morning of 03/02/2025 at 10.37am between Jct 11 and 10 Eastbound. It states a 50mph limit at that time and date, but my recolection was a 60mph limit, I was aparantly photographed at 57mph. How do I find proof of this contravention and how can I determine what the set speed limit was on that morning?

I received a notice for doing 79mph on 16/5/2025 - difficult to argue with but I too am extremely careful on this stretch of road as I know it's a smart motorway with all that it entails

My husband has received a notice of intended prosecution for going on 79, yet he wasn't. No pic, police said they didn't send pictures anymore. Is there any possibility to escalate the matter, anyone? Thanks

I too have received a notice for driving at 80 mph on the 16/05/25, J8/9-10 westbound. I drive to work on a daily basis through here for years and never go above 70 and never got a ticket before. I can see someone else reporting a similar event for 16/05. Was there a fault with the camera on that day? Please can anyone who’s received a notice for 16/05 comment here so we can establish a pettern.

I noticed on "what do they know" someone asked for the calibration data for this camera and it was calibrated in Jan 2025 valid until Jan 2026 - still doesn't confirm whether it may have been fault recently

Very odd to receive a fine for 79 mph or even 80mph given the well-known 10+2 rule Something fishy going on with this camera

The NPCC guidance is “greater than 10% + 2mph” so 79 is strictly speaking below this (ie does not exceed the threshold)

I have today received a fixed penalty notice for travelling at 80mph on 9th June 2025 but I don’t recall going that fast. I also use cruise control and a limiter. Does anyone have a view on whether it is worth contesting it, or is it going to be more trouble than it’s worth?

I have previously reported a notice from police received. It was stated we were caught driving 79 mph, although this is a small old car and we never speed her. They have sent us a copy of calibration certificate dated 31 st of January 2025, made in Australia. Last Saturday we had satnav on and recorded our speed all the way from Staines to Bristol and back. No speed limits signs on M4. Individual challenges will only bring extra money to the police, I think, there should be organised action but not sure how

I’ve just receive a PCN on 14/6/25 from camera M4-2493A Westbound at 79MPH. No gantry signs were illuminated. It seems many people are being fined at this location. Surely this is not right?
It seems over 70 MPH is now a PCN, not 70 +10% + 2. As others say, I’m not going to fight it as I don’t have the time or energy. I think this is what TVP want.

I received a notice for driving at 80 mph on the 15/05/25, J8/9-10 westbound. I have noticed several others have received a notice for that speed/date. I am wondering if anyone challenged this and received any update? Thanks.

Feels like the camera had gotten a bit overzealous around 15-16 May, churning out fines for 79-80 MPHs. What are the options on appealing potentially collectively?

Ours was for the 17th of May, police sent a calibration certificate dated 31st of January 2025. We have recently driven to Bristol, same motorway, same speed, with satnav on and recorded everything. There are no speed signs on M4 at all. We'll continue to drive only with satnav on and recording the speed. Not sure about appealing collectively, we're thinking about sharing in mass media, perhaps?

I’ve also had a notice for driving at 79mph eastbound Jct 10-8/9 on the 16/05/25 something fishy as I was using cruise control with limiter

I just received a NIP for doing 83mph in a 70 at this jct. I'm almost certain I was not travelling this speed, cruise control, kids in car etc.
Was there any update if these were successfully appealed?

Having seen the article in the Mail online regarding the speed camera’s discrepancies I can only conclude that this is the cause of the penalty notice I received!
