Northbound and southbound A1

Reported via mobile in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 10:39, Sat 22 October 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3906186.

I deliver the National Speed Awareness programme on behalf of UKRED. We teach rule 124 Highway Code, any road with street lights 30mph unless told differently. Except on motorways. On both carriageways of the A1 around Doncaster between the motorway restrictions there are hundreds of streetlights. There are no national speed limit gateway signs or repeaters along the whole length of this road. Technically everyone I teach, should they realise will travel this road at 30mph. Submitted for you attention and assistance should legislation cover this.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting us by Fix My Street on 22 October 2022 about signs on the network and for drawing this to our attention. We have conducted a survey of the route and note that although National Speed Limit terminal signs are present on the northbound mainline and junction approaches, the same cannot be said for the southbound to the north of Darrington. Despite the recommendations in the Highway Code, current design guidelines do not require highway authorities to provide repeater signs, although they are recommended. We have considered these signs and believe that since there is no change in the speed limit between the motorway and trunk road sections, there is a very-low safety risk associated with their absence. We are currently investigating improvement measures to this link, including the appropriateness of the current speed limit.

Your suggestion will be considered along with these developments.

    Kind regards
