Eastbound temporary traffic lights
Reported via mobile in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 12:59, Tue 18 October 2022
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3897617.
The eastbound traffic lights need looking at, it took me 43 minutes to get through them with the tail back which was almost back to the B road turn off for Glossop. This is insane as the traffic the other side going westbound was no where near as backed up. Please sort the timings as due to snake being shut also this is a nightmare for commuters etc.

I can now confirm these signals are in place following a road traffic collision that caused significant damage to the southern parapet of Salters Brook Bridge on the A628. In its current state, the parapet doesn’t provide the required level of restraint for the road to have two running lanes operating at national speed limit, so the signals are a mitigatory measure that’s required for us to keep the road open. I’ve spoken to our contractors, and they are aware of the issue, so investigation is already in progress. It was also agreed that eastbound traffic can back up as you stated, so the signals are manually operated during peak times to try to mitigate this issue as much as possible.
We’re looking at whether we can get some temporary protection to the damaged parapet that might enable us to reopen two lanes in each direction. We have a designer looking at options, but initial thoughts are that it looks unlikely to be possible.
And we’re also liaising with our communications team with a view to deploying some supplementary signage to explain the reason for the signals.
Going forward, we’re hoping to repair the damaged barrier in front of the northern parapet sometime next week – this will require convoyed traffic management, which will delay traffic slightly more than the signals do now, but this work will be carried out overnight when traffic flow is at its lowest. The permanent repairs to the damaged parapet, which will allow us to reopen the road fully, are likely to require a specialist stonemason due to the age and construction of the bridge, and as such it may be some time before we can organise the required resources.
Kind regards

I traveled this route last night, headed eastbound. The traffic signal timings are all wrong. They let 6 vehicles through headed eastbound but headed westbound they were letting 30 plus vehicles through. One time they ley 43 vehicles headed westbound through whilst only 3 vehicles were let through eastbound.
