Hard to see lane markings - M27 after Junction 5 going towards Portsmouth
Reported via desktop in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 14:26, Mon 17 October 2022
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3895485.
Twice this week ive been on the M27 traveling towards Portsmouth. On both occasions it was around 10am in the morning and the sun was low. It was very difficult to see the white lane markings on the concrete area's of the motorway (tarmac area's are ok). As a result a lot of drivers are only able to see the cracks in the road where the new additional lanes have been created. They follow these lines instead of the white lines as they cant been seen. Meaning that on both occasions I've had to swerve to miss drivers crossing over the white lines into the lane. Can they lines be made more prominent please.

Thank you for your report concerning road markings on the M27.
We currently have plans to completely resurface the stretch of motorway between junctions 5 and 7, including repainting markings. This scheme will add a thick layer of asphalt on top of the concrete that’s currently in place there, and it is due to start in Spring 2023, lasting approximately 12-18 months to complete. Up-to-date information can be found at the following link as we make it available:

The road markings around jct 5 to 7 on M27 are nearly invisible when travelling towards Portsmouth. Lorries and car drivers are finding extremely difficult to see the line as there are many different lines and drivers are drifting across because they can’t follow or see the road markings. This problem is exasperated when the sun is bright. There will be accidents and lives are in danger

Having nearly been taken out by a lorry today 28/10 because of this issue I am not sure it can wait until Spring 2023 or will it only be a priority when there is a serious incident

When the sun shines on the motorway bwettern J 5-7 M27, the white lines are almost impossible to see, with the black line shining up more. The amount of vehicles in the middle of the lanes are getting ridiculous. Please sort this out!

I travelled through this junction after heavy rain and where the sun was shining onto the wet road the lines were invisible. I witnessed a near miss as someone travelled across a lane and I am assuming could not see the lane markings. Please sort this as soon as possible before someone is hurt.

Junc 5 M27. Extremely difficult to see the white line lane markings. Vehicles drifting because of this. There is going to be an accident.

I became disorientated yesterday afternoon between J7 and J8 with no clearly defined white lines.

This is really bad particularly when the road is damp and the light is poor. The expansion joints, old markings, and overbanding from previous repairs are too hard to distinguish from the proper road markings. I have witnessed multiple near side-swipes, vehicles missing merge from the airport slip road and nearly hitting the bridge parapet, and myself experienced ADAS systems trying to steer the car into the wrong lane. A serious accident is bound to happen here.

Worried how unsafe these lane markings are in the bright sunshine.

From J7 to J8 Eastbound the white lines are practically invisible due to the light colour on the road. I've seen numerous people stray out of their lane because you just can't see the lines. Please do something urgently.

When it has rained and it is sunny it is almost impossible to see the lines on the road. It is only a matter of time before this causes a serious injury

When the sun shines on the motorway between J 5-7 M27, the white lines are almost impossible to see, with the black line shining up more. The number of vehicles in the middle of the lanes is dangerous! Please expedite this resurface project!

As others I have found myself between lines several times when the road is wet or sun shining and it was very worrying. This needs rectification as soon as possible especially with the Winter fast approaching

This is ridiculous that it’s not being done sooner, it’s so dangerous. I’ve seen 3 near misses it’s a fatal waiting to happen. Needs to be sorted sooner

I nearly had an accident here last week with a lorry who couldn't see the road markings. I'm only aware as I fell foul of it myself a few months ago. The markings are impossible to see at certain times of day with the sun and the black line shine, leading to to believe they are the labe markings and they actually aren't! Something needs to be done before Spring 2023.

Given the number of reports on this one issue, and the major concern about an accident waiting to happen, I've this morning contacted my local MP. This issue needs to be resolved ASAP and before the spring time, especially with the weather getting worse.

Really awful lack of road markings making it very dangerous on this stretch of motorway. Had a near accident today with a car straddling lanes because of it. Its so hard to stay in the lane because of the poor markings this needs to be sorted URGENTLY not in the spring

Now nearing the end of July 2023 and no work has progressed on this issue as we near the season of this becoming a dangerous issue again
