Speed camera flashing below limit

Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 15:28, Fri 30 September 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3859677.

Travelling eastbound on M27 between j7 Hedge End and j8 Burseldon approx 14:50. Gantry displayed 50mph limit and no red x. Multiple cars flashed travelling below 50mph including myself. This camera appears to be faulty and the resulting flash is a safety distraction to drivers abiding by the limit in place.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report concerning speed cameras on the M27.

The M27 between junctions 4 and 11 has recently been upgraded to an all-lanes running smart motorway and includes several HADECS speed/Red X enforcement cameras, new to this section of motorway. These cameras are now operational and the HADECS camera supplier has advised that the cameras are working as expected and that they are detecting speeding violations and Red X violations when variable speed limits and lane closures are respectively set. HADECS enforces the speed limit displayed on associated ‘red ring’ signals at the time across multiple lanes. If the signals are not displaying a speed limit, then HADECS enforces the National Speed Limit. There are built-in safe-guards which prevent the camera from activating if there is a critical fault, for example with the AMI signal showing the speed limit. The system is designed to ensure that it will only capture an offence when the equipment is working correctly; this is a requirement of HOTA. I can confirm that only speeding motorists and red X offenders will be prosecuted.

We will continue to monitor this and will arrange any work if the situation changes. If you require any further update on this issue our Customer Contact Centre is available 24 hours a day at:
