  • Thank you for your report concerning the damaged manhole cover on the westbound carriageway.

We’re aware of this failing Southern Water cover which we've previously reported to them. Whilst repairs have been carried out by Southern Water they continue to fail.

Whilst, this isn't a safety issue at this time, we're monitoring the cover closely for any changes, when we'll raise as a safety concern with Southern Water.

Southern Water can be contacted independently at https://www.southernwater.co.uk/ help-advice/ contact-us.

    Kind regards

  • I disagree wholly that this isn’t a safety issue. The surface is so sunken that for pedestrians standing on the crossing point adjacent it appears cars are flashing headlights to let you cross. With school children using this crossing and days getting darker it is only a matter of time until a serious accident occurs. The last person struck on the crossing island was a fatality. Will it take another for action to be taken. Southern Water are advising they cannot repair as you won’t give a permit, action is needed urgently

  • SOuthern Water attended 6th October and inside 24 hours the repair has failed. Surface already sunk and manhole rocking again. To pedestrians dipping cars easily mistaken for a flash of headlights to cross. A real danger and nuisance. Time for Highways to intervene as that is 3 poor repairs in the last 6 months. Apply the permisions you have under 81, 4, b New Roads and Streetworks Act (4)If an undertaker fails to secure that apparatus is maintained to the reasonable satisfaction of a relevant authority in accordance with this section— (a)the street authority may in such cases as may be prescribed, and (b)any other relevant authority may in any case, execute any emergency works needed in consequence of the failure.
