Missleading/incorrect lights on overhead signs

Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 22:01, Fri 16 September 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3830829.

The overhead lights show lane 1 & 2 (from left) as a red X, I would normally exit at J3 (lane 1), I stayed in lane 3 doing 40MHP as per overhead signs and the roadworks are after the J3. This resulted in unnecessary mileage/pollution. It would seem correct that lane 2 had a red X and not lane 1 as you would leave the M3 at J3 Approx. 700 yards before the roadwork.

This make me upset because other driver were leaving the M3 at junction 3 which looked clear of any works and its bad teaching for drivers to ignore red X signs.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report concerning misleading signage on M3 gantries.

We apologise for any confusion or inconvenience caused by this issue.

These signals should no longer be in place, however please report any further problems with gantry signage. Our team have been made aware of the inconvenience caused by this signage, and going forward we will attempt to find safety-conscious solutions that avoid encouraging customers to take unnecessary diversions. Currently, any road users found to be disregarding red X lane closures may be prosecuted, which we hope will disincentivise users from ignoring these signals.
