Complete chaos

Reported via mobile in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 20:07, Sun 11 September 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3817932.

Full weekend of closure has caused utter bedlam around a large area of the north west . Lancaster was one big car park . Not fair on any residents of this area and many miles of areas surrounding it . The a6 isn’t a suitable option alone for that volume of traffic for full weekends . Could other options be explored like contraflow one lane of north bound? Work more night closures and open in days ? Just close two lanes at a time ? 3 more weekends of that sort of traffic just seems unjust and incredibly badly thought through

  • The planning for this is ridiculous. The roads surround this area are not built for this volume of traffic. Motorways were built for a reason. If works need to go ahead they need to do lane closures rather than full motorway closures. It has not been planned well at all. In other areas across the country when this volume of work has been required they have reduced the other side of the motorway to 2 lanes and used 1 lane for traffic flowing the opposite direct using cones to separate and a reduced speed limit. Then on the side having works kept one lane open. That way 2 lanes flowing in each direct. People can plan as much as they want but the roads can't cope. Even going the back roads yesterday to avoid it all in a journey that should have been 1 hour took 3 hours. People have reasons they have to travel and this delayed me getting to a sick family member in hospital due to poor planning.

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about the delays caused by our closure of the southbound carriageway of M6 motorway at junction 33 on the weekend of 10 September. We understand motorists were caught in traffic for a significant period of time and we’re sincerely sorry for this.

We’ve taken onboard recent feedback and plan to do things differently this weekend (23 – 26 September) while we confirm the rest of the programme with our contractors. We plan to work overnight between the hours of 9pm and 6am under a full southbound closure or with single lane running. During the daytime, we will establish lane closures and run two narrow lanes of traffic past the work area to keep customers moving, removing the need for the full weekend closures, which were previously planned. Once the programme has been finalised with our contractors, we will advertise full details via our website, a press release and social media.

If you would like a more detailed response on this matter, please contact our 24hr Customer Contact Centre • Email – info@nationalhighways.co.uk • Tel: 0300 123 5000

    Kind regards
