Northbound before exit for Bristol Airport
Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 14:35, Wed 24 August 2022
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3777828.
There appears to be no advance indication of the turn-off to Bristol Airport until you pass the junction. I have travelled there twice in the last 3 weeks and was looking out for signage but in both cases I saw nothing until passing the required turn-off. I then had to go up to Cribbs Causeway and return southbound.

Thank you for contacting National Highways concerning signing for Bristol Airport.
The signing strategy for Bristol Airport would have been put in place in agreement with the relevant local authorities. The agreed strategy for M5 northbound traffic is to take the junction 22 exit towards the A38, for southbound traffic the agreed route is to take the junction 18A exit from the M5 towards the A4. The signing for southbound traffic continues along the M5/M49 towards the A4. The reason for the split between the north – and southbound directions is to ensure that the generally congested local road network around Bristol is not overloaded to the point, where the roads exceed capacity, subsequently causing a full gridlock. Local commuting traffic will likely find their way between junctions 22 and 17 via the A369, A370 and other suitable routes, however for the majority of the traffic leaving the M5 on the southbound the A4 from junction 18A and the A38 from junction 22 northbound were deemed to be the suitable routes to carry the additional traffic. If additional signing on the M5 is identified to be necessary, in principal, the signing strategy would have to be agreed with the relevant local authorities first. It could be a challenge to add further signing anywhere between junction 19 and junction 17 for northbound traffic as the local road network does not cater for the additional capacity.
