  • These lines are still missing and vehicles are crossing lanes dangerously because they cannot see the correct path to take. Have witnessed several near collisions due to the above.

  • These lane markings are in 'urgent' need of repainting! When the road is wet it is very bad and with winter lurking will be even more important that they are repainted.

  • Extremely dangerous! For well over a year now, these lane markings have been faded and they are almost non existent now making it impossible to make them out. In very wet conditions they are completely invisible. The roundabout is very large and it is extremely busy with very heavy duty and very large vehicles crossing through 24/7. How long will it be before a fatal accident for someone to take this seriously. People are taking their lives into their own hands at this roundabout with traffic cutting up each other and vehicles wondering across the lanes unaware of where their lanes actually should be. As we approach the winter, there really needs to be priority consideration for the road maintenance. Its an absolute disaster waiting to happen.

  • Reading Borough Council says they are responsible for maintaining the white lines on the J11 roundabout but they are waiting for permission from National Highways to work on the roundabout.

Your response to the report is a standard reply and does not recognise that this is the council’s responsibility. This needs an urgent review and permission needs to be granted to Reading Borough Council so they can instruct their contractor to begin works immediately.

When driving a car, motorists rely on the guidance of markings for direction, traffic flow and to be alerted of hazards or upcoming turns. Pedestrians also look to road markings to understand the layout or flow of traffic on a road, and for instruction when crossing a road.

Therefore if road markings are faded to the point of being almost invisible, this can seriously impact the safety of motorists and pedestrians. Even a single moment of confusion on the roads could cause injury or even fatality, and so markings should be in the best possible condition at all times.

The Road Traffic Act 1988 outlines that roads must be safe for users. Therefore if an accident were to occur due to the lack of road markings, or the inadequate quality of them, then the responsibility may well lie with those in charge of the road marking maintenance. An incident caused as a direct result of road marking quality could therefore be a violation of the law.

  • No mention anywhere I can see of roadworks at junction 11 this evening prior to starting my journey ... at 8pm ...plenty of cones leading upto jct 11 m4 ...no sign of a single person working on this carriage way not one ...they way the motorist is treated is abysmal...in 22 years of journeys I can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of issue free journeys. ...90 minute journey turned into 150 minutes... unbelievable

    State changed to: Fixed
