Lack of dashed directional lane markings entering roundabout from East

Reported via mobile in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 12:16, Fri 12 August 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3749422.

This is a 3 lane slip clearly marked with arrows for which lane for each destination. The roundabout is 4 lanes and there are no dashed markings crossing the lanes to indicate which lane to move into when joining the roundabout. Left hand lane is pretty obvious but the others it's confusing. e.g. if I'm going straight on do I go into 2nd or 3rd lane. If I'm going right do I go in 3rd or 4th lane? On slip both entry lanes are marked Thetford. So presumably I could pick either in both cases. This leaves open the possibility of drivers in different lanes both picking the same lane and colliding. Please use dashed lines going across the lane markings when entering from the slip to indicate which slip lane should join which roundabout lane.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways. We appreciate you taking the time to report this.

The markings at this roundabout were renewed last year and we’ve no further road marking renewal planned in the immediate future due to the Major Project ‘Thickthorn Junction Improvement’ that is planned to commence next financial year. Thickthorn roundabout will be subject to a complete overhaul, improving access into Norwich with widening and full signalisation of the gyratory. The project will provide two new free-flowing slip roads that will connect the A47 with the A11. The new slip roads will re-route traffic away from the junction and flow it under new underpasses. They can access full details about the planned improvements to the Thickthorn roundabout at this link A47 Thickthorn Junction Improvement.

    Kind regards
