At the junction of A31 Pickett Hill

Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 10:26, Wed 3 August 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3727090.

.. I need report that last evening a vehicle overshot the exit slip from the A31 on to Picket Hill, roadside fencing around the Bournemouth Water/ telecoms mast area was destroyed which I appreciate is probably a matter for the land owners but this accident (the 7th similar such incident recorded by local residents since January 2021) highlights the fact that the HCC 7.5 ton weight restriction sign to the off side of Picket Hill destroyed in an accident last year has not been replaced (a sign to the nearside was demolished and replaced earlier) and in consequence in the interim several HGV drivers questioned on their use of Picket Hill and Hightown Hill have stated that no restriction sign was visible to them..a replacement sign is therefore essential and I will therefore be grateful if you could please pass this request forward.. Also you may recall that over many years the local consensus has requested that measures to reduce or at least control traffic volume, size and speed to Picket Hill and Hightown Hill might be installed through either closure of the A31 junction, signage on the A31 or physical constraints on Picket Hill/Hightown Hill none of which has achieved any result and I now wonder if the imminent completion of work to improve traffic flow on the A31 may be an opportune moment to revisit concerns which would require consideration from both HCC and Highways England managements – your thoughts will be appreciated.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report concerning traffic issues at Picket Hill.

I have passed your comments on to our Programme Development Team and our Signs Team. They will review the information currently in place and implement any necessary changes. We thank you for bringing this issue to our attention.

Currently we don't have any plans for this road beyond the A31 Ringwood Scheme, however we've passed this on to the Scheme planning team for consideration.

Furthermore, we'd like to recommend that in the event you see poor driver behaviour or drivers ignoring or disobeying appropriate road signage/the Highway Code, you report it to the Police, as we aren't an enforcement agency and can't action poor driver behaviour.

If you require any further update on this issue our Customer Contact Centre is available 24 hours a day at:
