Faulty speed cameras - 19/7/22 @ 16:15

An unintended speed photograph on the M27 @ 16:15 yesterday (19/7/22), the speed limit was set to the national Limit of 70mph with no overhead advised restrictions / limits, the cameras were incorrectly capturing all the vehicles passing, in fact I thought the continuous flashing was lightning the lights were so bright and frequent - I and the very ale pans me were doing a speed of 68 to 70 mph i to and all the vehicles around me were photographed incorrectly by cameras, the cameras were obviously not synched to the correct speed limit or were faulty. There must have been hundreds of vehicle registrations incorrectly taken.
I’d like assurances that the faulty cameras will not mean fines through the post, could Somebody please confirm that there was a fault as I personally was driving safely and within the law?

Thank you for your report concerning a faulty speed camera on the M27.
We've assessed the cameras in this area and can't find any faults with them, suggesting the issue is not an electrical fault. It's worth noting that under the new M4 Smart scheme, these cameras are set up to flash both speeding motorists and those violating red 'X' restrictions displayed on overhead gantries, therefore this may be a case of road users being unused to the cameras' new functions. Nevertheless, we are monitoring these and all nearby speed cameras for faults, and will adjust the new parameters if necessary.

This continues to be an issue. In the last week there have been multiple flashes on both the east and west bound M27 when all cars have been travelling under the speed limits displayed or NSL. There have also been no red crossed displayed at these times. On multiple occasions I have found the unexpected and frequent flashes dazzling and distracting to driving. Are you sure these cameras are working correctly and calibrated to the appropriate displayed gantry speeds? To who can FOI requests be directed regarding triggers and fines issues for the cameras on this stretch of road?

Thank you for your report concerning a speed camera on the M27.
The M27 between junctions 4 and 11 has recently been upgraded to an all-lanes running smart motorway and includes several HADECS speed/Red X enforcement cameras, new to this section of motorway. These cameras are now operational and the HADECS camera supplier has advised that the cameras are working as expected and that they are detecting speeding violations and Red X violations when variable speed limits and lane closures are respectively set.
HADECS enforces the speed limit displayed on associated ‘red ring’ signals at the time across multiple lanes. If the signals are not displaying a speed limit, then HADECS enforces the National Speed Limit. There are built-in safeguards which prevent the camera from activating if there is a critical fault, for example with the AMI signal showing the speed limit. The system is designed to ensure that it will only capture an offence when the equipment is working correctly; this is a requirement of HOTA.
I can confirm that only speeding motorists and red X offenders will be prosecuted.
We will continue to monitor this and will arrange any work if the situation changes. If you require any further update on this issue or if you would like to request further information, our Customer Contact Centre is available 24 hours a day at:
