No highway verge/roundabout grass cutting or vegetation removal for years

Reported via desktop in the Vegetation (grass/hedges/trees) (NH) category anonymously at 11:53, Sat 16 July 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3680557.

This enquiry concerns the maintenance of the verges and roundabouts at the intersection of the A38 and M5 at Wychbold (junction 5). The highway verges, islands and roundabouts throughout this complicated junction are in a poor state with long grass, weeds, self-seeded shrubs etc. These are an eyesore and, in places, constitute a safety hazard for drivers as they impact on the visibility splays. For many drivers this is an "arrival" point into Worcestershire off the national motorway network, and it gives a very poor impression. I am not aware of any grass cutting or other maintenance since the “dumbbell” layout was modified many years ago. I understand the desire to retain long grass and wild flowers along some verges, but this should not be the case here. I have been informed by Worcestershire County Council that responsibility for maintenance here does not rest with them. Please can you arrange some proper maintenance.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report about the overgrown vegetation in this area.

We have raised this with our inspectors to be investigated at the first possible opportunity.

Our inspectors will visit and review this and decide whether remedial work is required to make the area safe for the travelling public.

If the issues aren't safety critical this will be cut as part of our annual grass cutting programme, which we are currently undertaking now.

Although we always try to respond to these reports in the quickest time possible, we would ask that anything of a safety critical nature be raised with our Customer Contact Centre directly. They are available 24 hours a day, on 0300 123 5000. This will ensure we process any such report as soon as it is received.

    Kind regards,

    National Highways
