Average speed of 40mph
Reported via mobile in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 17:19, Mon 11 July 2022
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3668208.
Speed limit reduced to 40mph both A1 South and North between Wansford and Stamford. This is far too slow, and is making driving conditions dangerous. Just like to also add that I haven't once seen any sign of your workers yet you've got the limit in place. It appears you just try and annoy and inconvenience road users with your widespread incompetence. Please review urgently.

Thank you for contacting National Highways regarding the reduced speed limit on the A1.
We're carrying out work to renew the signs and undertaking carriageway maintenance works which will include upgrading 17.2km of safety barrier, on the A1 between Wothorpe and Wansford. Once complete, this will ensure the A1 continues to remain in a safe and serviceable condition. The work will be undertaken overnight between 9pm and 6am, with some road closures. This means that the work won't always be visible to the public. The speed restrictions are in place for safety reasons due to the removal and replacement of the safety barrier. There will be gaps in the barrier at times meaning there will be nothing separating each carriageway. As a result of our risk assessment on the scheme, to reduce the severity should a cross-over incident occur, the speed limit must be reduced to 40mph. Adherence to this speed limit is essential to keeping all drivers safe, therefore speed cameras have been installed to encourage this. These measures will remain in place until the work to renew the barrier is complete. Thank you again for contacting us. For anything else, please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or by email at info@nationalhighways.co.uk.
Kind regards National Highways

I travel this road regulary and i see no evidence of any new work or signs of anything done, i agree with the above person, no one working and over the distance only about half a mile of incomplete barrier. How long at present speed will these repairs take

Agree completely. Likely to increase driver frustration and reduce safety. Utterly pointless. .

I travel on this road approximately once per month. I have not seen any sign of progress with this. The 40mph limit seems totally disproportionate with other roads I travel on - for example two lane roads with 60mph limit and no barriers.
It is simply not acceptable on a major trunk road to take such a lackadaisical attitude to the impact of such major restrictions

This is one of the most dangerous roads in England the 40 mph limit just makes cars get too close together. Also signage explaining why only says "safety reasons" and there are threatening signs talking about convictions but no actual explanation.
Incredibly frustrating!

Can you please advise when you are going to start and complete this work that was due to begin a year ago?

Why is the 40mph on A1 near Stamford still in place? No works are taking place. It’s ridiculously slow.

Sat 24th june.No workers,no machinery. No evidence of work.Only an average speed limit in place. This has been in place for so long.Just a money maker from speeding fines.

Seriously. This has to be a major failing for the national highways. How long do you need to replace a barrier. Maybe you replace a section per 100 speeding fines that you receive.

If you get a speeding fine on this stretch of the road I am sure when challenging it, you can point at this page to demonstrate that the highways agency has no interest on fixing this road at all. It's over a year since they last posted a reply on this thread and no signs of work on the section at all.

Clearly a money making scheme and absolutely no sign of any work being done for at least 6 months. The only new sign is one showing how many speeding convictions this cash cow has brought in. It is more dangerous to reduce to 40 due to the frustration by those who do not obey this pointless limit.
