Thank you for contacting National Highways concerning litter on the M5.
We carry out regular inspections of all our routes and schedule litter-picking activities for any areas requiring attention. Your concerns have been passed to our maintenance team. They will inspect the area and if necessary arrange for the litter to be cleared.
We share your concern that litter on our roads is unsightly as well as a risk to wildlife and the environment. It’s a huge challenge to keep roads free of litter and debris and can take hours to clear each stretch of road. If people didn’t drop litter in the first place it wouldn’t need to be picked up.
In some areas there is no safe space for our colleagues to work. In these circumstances it is necessary to close lanes or slip roads to ensure we can work in safety. These closures are co-ordinated with other maintenance work to minimise disruption for our customers, which can occasionally cause delays in clearing litter from some locations.
On occasions litter will accumulate shortly after we have removed it. We trust you will appreciate the balance between the appearance of this litter against the safety of our workforce, the associated costs and the potential inconvenience caused by removing it.
If you require any further information please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or info@nationalhighways.co.uk.
Kind regards
