Signage clutter and unclear speed limit signs.

Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 08:48, Wed 1 June 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3565610.

Yesterday while driving westbound the A27 on the Lewes Road between Alciston and Lewes I was very confused and distracted by the appalling signage regarding speed limits along that strip. There was a lack of clarity about the speed limit which has left me anxious and upset that I was driving over the limit in what I understood to be 40mph zone. There are not clear speed limit signs in that direction and then a speed counter flashing the current speed (mine was 36mph) at drivers appearing in red despite being under 40mph leaving me worrying the limit was lower.

There is a real lack of clarity with signs jumping from 50mph to 30mph and the flow of traffic was uneven due to the confusion and but I am clear that I was driving safely with the flow of traffic. Please examine this area and ensure that there is clarity for drivers.

When driving back eastwards later in the day the speed limit circles are much more clear, there is far less clutter all the way along that stretch and the speed camera signs give fair warning. I'm concerned that the same cannot be said for the Westbound direction and if I was driving over the speed limit it will be deeply unfair as I was unaware of the cameras, was unclear on the speed limit and insist it was incorrectly labelled and changing too fast.

The roadworks in that area have been ongoing for many months and I have successfully navigated the changing road closures, speed restrictions and diversions on many occasions. Yesterday's poor signage has left me very stressed and anxious that despite my best faith efforts to abide by the speed limits I was not able to because they were unclear and am fearful of receiving a penalty fine for something that was not my fault.

I cannot provide any photos as I was driving alone in the car but please make sure the signs are reviewed in that area making the restrictions clear because the confusion and distraction to drivers is dangerous.
