Slip roads incorrectly closed

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 21:21, Mon 23 May 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3546263.

Some numpty has closed all the slip roads off the A11 around Wymondham. You can't get off to go to Mulbarton creating a ten mile detour nor can you get into Wymondham without a massive detour. Pretty damned stupid considering the cost of fuels and also all the issues with climate! I was going northbound and wanted to go to Mulbarton which is three miles away. I couldn't get off at the correct turn so had to go to Thickthorn, then to Hethersett, back to Wymondham over the flyover of the turn I needed! Surely it isn't rocket science to keep slip roads off open so traffic can get away? A paramedic told me he was stuck in traffic all the way down the A11 from Norwich to Attleborough with no alternatives to get off. He said he was trying to get to a cardiac arrest patient but because the Mulbarton slip was closed he couldn't go via Old Buckenham, nor could he go off at Wymondham down the old A11. You could have been responsible for a death

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways regarding the slip roads being incorrectly closed. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

I’m sorry to hear of your frustration caused by our roadworks. We’ve had to close some of the entry and exit slip roads between Spooner Row and the Tuttles Interchange for two reasons:

    • Because we’re reconstructing the northbound side of the scheme, and so traffic isn’t able to access the slip roads during this time.

    • Because we’ve reduced the A11 to one lane in both directions. In order to encourage through traffic to flow as efficiently as possible, we need to close certain entry and exit slips within the roadworks. Cars either queuing on these slip roads, or trying to join the single lane from them, will interrupt the traffic flow, and cause through traffic to become more congested within the roadworks.

Thank you again for contacting us. If you need more information about this, please feel free to contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 500 or by email at info@highwaysengland.co.uk.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
