Single lane restriction and Wymondham on-slip merge causing standstill traffic

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 13:00, Thu 19 May 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3536855.

Yes the reduced speed and single lane will increase journey times but it shouldn't be coming to a stop as currently is.

The traffic coming to a complete standstill on the Northbound A11 is due to Wymondham traffic joining at the only open slip road, causing drivers to stop and let them in. Although just half a mile later there is a works exit and restrictions end!

Surely just get the single lane traffic across to the offside before the on-slip (into end of works exit lane), then Wymondham traffic from the slip can carry on direct to the nearside lane, no merging needed.

The works exit can operate on traffic light control for the occasions they exit!

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways regarding the single lane restriction and Wymondham on-slip merge causing standstill traffic. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

The implementation of traffic management as well as a reduction of the speed limit will always hamper traffic flows when they are first installed. We’ve worked with the Road Intelligence Unit to understand the best traffic flow that can be achieved when reducing capacity on this section of the A11 by 50% and instructing road users to drive at 40mph. We do expect the traffic to flow better when road users get used to the traffic management layout, and as they start to heed our warnings of expected delay times, resulting in them beginning to re-time their journeys

Your suggestion to modify the traffic management is not possible, as this is due to the crossover locations been located only 100m away from the end of the Tuttles Lane northbound entry slip.

Thank you again for contacting us. If you need more information about this, please feel free to contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 500 or by email at info@highwaysengland.co.uk.

    Kind regards
