Dangerous driving from highway maintenance vehicles

Reported via mobile in the Pothole (NH) category anonymously at 17:34, Fri 13 May 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3524273.

I am entirely fed up of the dangerous driving from highway maintenance vehicles on the A3. Today I witnessed incredibly dangerous undertaking and cutting people up whilst speeding in traffic. Southbound at 1700 on Friday 13th May. I would be frankly embarrassed if my staff behaved this way, and it'll get a lot worse when one of those morons kills somebody

  • Fl72 NVG driving dangerously in Cardiff

Posted anonymously at 09:01, Sat 7 January 2023

  • Driver of Highway Maintenance van with registration FL68 ANU yesterday followed me south on A453, over the M1 and on to A50. Driving dangerously and aggressively the whole way. Both lanes were busy and it wasn’t possible to get past slower vehicles but the traffic was flowing at a good speed. This driver repeatedly accelerated behind me coming right up to the back of my car. At one point he was so close there was no gap between him and me. If I had been required to brake he would have ended up in my car, probably killing me. As we went round the roundabout and on to the slip road to the A50 he went round me and several other vehicles using the left lane and cut back in right in front of someone. This man is totally irresponsible and not fit to be driving for a living.

  • Highways maintenance drainage conditions survey high sided flat bed van reg: Y900CSS. Pulled out of a give way slip road onto dual carriageway and ran me off the road!!!!!! Happened this morning at 8.40am in Monmouth. It's a give way you DO NOT pull out in front of a speeding car on a duel carriageway

  • Highway Maintenance van, swaying lanes on the m1 near junction 12 at 21:56 on 18/3/23 reg plate MK68CZF. Incredibly dangerous! Swerved into hard shoulder, then almost then clipped a car in the middle lane swerving back causing other drivers to hoot him!

  • Why are these idiots complaining to National Highways just because whatever cut them up had a highway maintenance sticker on it? I bought one of them on eBay for £10, stuck it on my car so I can park anywhere.

  • Highway maintenance lorries on the 4045 this morning were driving 40 miles an hour on a 60 mile an hour stretch of road backing up traffic, then on the dual carriageway, they sped up, preventing me from getting into the correct lane for my turn off at the roundabout. Either they are driving half asleep or they are just being obstreperous.

  • Driver of van HG23BGE driving over cross hatched area where lane has ended and pulling in front of me at speed going through Great Burdon leading from A66 towards Darlington

  • On the Uxbridge Road roundabout connecting to Kenton Lane and Clamp Hill. VW Passat? Not sure of the make as the sticker was covering it. Reg KV07UTR cut me up as I was turning right, I was on the roundabout and he just pulled out in front of me, didn't even look right to make sure his way was clear. Not even sure if he was an Official Highway Maintenance as the chevron sticker was so badly fitted

  • I was driving home on Thursday 8th June at 4.45 pm when one of your vehicles, registration number WX13 RZF, pulled out of a junction and narrowly missed my car. It was the Great Malvern junction in Rhydd as I was travelling back home to Upton Upon Severn. The driver of the vehicle slammed his brakes on as he realised he had pulled out too soon, but then he accelerated to try and get in front of my car. I had to slam my brakes on in order to avoid a collision. The passenger in the van stuck his 2 fingers up at me as if it was my fault! He then continued to drive erratically and was doing at least 60 mph in a 40 mph speed limit through Hanley Castle. I would like a call back from someone regarding this incident.

  • 5.30ish pm 11 July 2023 on lady Milford's bridge in Powys I saw one of your highway maintenance drivers driving recklessly fast over the weak bridge (which has a speed limit of 4mph). He then drove past me and my dogs on a narrow lane with no pavements at the same if not faster speed coming dangerously close to us. This is aggressive and dangerous driving from one of your representatives and I'm appalled.

He was a youngish white male (sub 40) with brown hair. There was an X and a Z in the final three digits of the licence plate, I'm afraid I didn't get the rest. Little white car.

  • Thank you for contacting us regarding dangerous driving. This Defect Reporting Tool is not for reporting poor driving this is for reporting defects on our network.

However, anyone using a vehicle that is used for work purposes or stopping on any highway or high-speed roads requires markings to meet Chapter 8 requirements. These will be fluorescent chevron markings and highway maintenance written on the rear. Unfortunately, this would mean it could be a number of different people such as local authority work, utility companies, developers, traffic management suppliers, etc. They are not always owned or operated by us.

National Highways vehicles will usually have our logo displayed on the side to show that it is one of our vehicles.

If you have any further reports of driver behaviour issues, please contact our Customer Contact Centre. Our Customer Contact Centre is available 24 hours a day at:
