Massive tailbacks junc 9 northbound m5 due to roadworks

Development works by Barnwood and associated roadworks, reduced lanes etc are causing traffic to queue back onto the hard shoulder of the motorway junction 5 M5 northbound for almost a mile, no warnings are posted just advice that the hard shoulder is for emergencies only. Traffic is stopped in the inside lane of the motorway as no warning given to use hardshoulder, in the wet weather this is an accident waiting to happen - please please do something before there is a major accident.

Thank you for contacting National Highways concerning congestion on the M5 at junction 9.
We’re aware that during the peak travel period such as the morning commute, delays and queuing traffic may be experienced exiting the M5 northbound at junction 9.
Safety is our first imperative and we’ve a number of roadside messages for display on our electronic Variable Message Signs which warn road users of queuing traffic, including (but not limited to) QUEUE CAUTION, QUEUE ON SLIP ROAD and QUEUE SLOW DOWN.
Our Regional Operations Centre will apply appropriate messages when alerted to queuing traffic. But should you experience occasions where these messages aren’t active when queues have formed, then if it’s safe and legal to do so, you may dial 0300 123 5000 and alert our 24/7 customer contact centre who will investigate immediately.
Further to this there is a scheme due to start in June to widen the northbound exit slip and roundabout to prevent the issues we’re currently experiencing, the scheme is expected to be in place for 3 months and is planned to start after the Jubilee bank holiday.
