M56 exit roundabout onto A556 south and A56 towards Lymm and Altrincham

Reported via desktop in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 23:22, Sun 8 May 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3510671.

On exiting the M56 (heading east) you loop round to the A556/Bowdon feeder roundabout. Road markings state that the left Lane is for the A556 and A56 to Lymm, the right lane is for A56 to Lymm. Many vehicles assume the left lane is for A556 only and attempt to overtake from the right lane onto the A556. I’ve seen many near misses here, and I was hit there today - I was going right on this roundabout using the left lane as directed by the road markings. The other driver stopped straight away and we exchanged details etc. but we both noticed how much car debris there is there from previous collisions. This roundabout is not in many Sat Navs, meaning confused drivers are looking at their devices, at this confusing roundabout. The left lane needs marking as A556 only, and the right lane A56 Lymm only, this is as you’d expect and would avoid confusion and collisions. Thank you

Updates

  • This happened to me on 17 July 2023 - I had a collision exactly as described above - when is this going to be rectified?

  • Why is this area so run down with rubbish ? There so much litter. Considering Bowdon roundabout a56 only just been done up, Dunham Road leading to the roundabout and surrounding area is full of rubbish.
