Updates

  • Thank you for contacting national Highways via Fix My Street on 5 April with regards to litter on the M18.

We understand your concerns regarding this issue. Managing litter/debris and its removal is a constant battle on the motorway and trunk road network. As an organisation we collect more than 7,500 tonnes of litter from our roads each year.

As a standard we carry out cyclic maintenance on the whole of the network twice a year this covers all aspects of general maintenance including litter picking, drainage and lighting inspections and sweeping etc.

Having checked the schedule we are due in this location in May 2022. We do also carry out daily patrols on the network and if any locations are found to be a particular issue then these will be entered onto the defect system and addressed separately.

We also work with local authorities to coordinate litter picking activity and work with motorway services to discourage littering. Please see the attached link to our strategy https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/ government/ uploads/ system/ uploads/ attachment_data/ file/ 937593/ MCR19_0231_-_Highways_England_Litter_Strategy_Update_2020_rev_11-20.pdf.
