Increase in noise
Reported via desktop in the Vegetation (grass/hedges/trees) (NH) category anonymously at 15:41, Tue 15 March 2022
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3390687.
You have taken down trees along this bank which has now exposed the motorway. I would hope that you are replacing these asap. In the meantime can you erect screening to both obscure the traffic and hopefully reduce the traffic noise that has increased significantly since the felling of all the trees. I pass here on a regular basis and live nearby.

Thank you for contacting National Highways. The removal of trees has been carried out for safety reasons to prevent t deteriorating trees falling onto the motorway, and possibly damaging a Scottish Power line.
This work was identified by an inspection during the construction of the Smart Motorway M62 J10 – 12. Many of the existing trees in this plot were partially buried under soil on the M62 banking causing stress in the trees. The main species here is Ash, which are now showing signs of Ash Dieback. The second species is Crack Willow which are prone to snapping in high winds. The trees are located on the north side of the M62 with no hard shoulder and in falling distance of the carriageway. Adjacent to the plot and Spring Lane are Scottish Power’s overhead power cables. Proximity to the cables is another reason to carry out tree felling.
Most of the trees required felling and the bank will shortly be replanted with smaller and slow growing trees/shrubs to provide habitat integrity and maintain screening of the plot at lower height levels. There are some Hawthorn trees that have been left on the banking with some smaller Cherry and replacement plants in tubes from the Smart Motorway scheme.
We appreciate you feel a noise fence would minimise disruption to you. At the beginning of the design phase for the M62 J10-12 Smart Motorways Project, there were only three locations identified for noise barriers to be considered due to the smart motorway, none of which were at this location. This is mainly due to this area of The M62 being located on a high and steep embankment. It would be difficult to install any fence here without a major widening for which land was not available.
